In a significant political shift, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has achieved a decisive victory over the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Delhi’s assembly elections, marking its return to power in the capital after 27 years. The BJP secured 48 out of 70 seats, surpassing the majority threshold of 36 seats.
This outcome is particularly notable given AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal’s previous assertion at a rally last year: “Modi ji iss janam mein aap hume nahi hara sakte” (Modi ji, you cannot defeat us in this lifetime). A video of this statement has gained widespread attention on social media following the election results.
The defeat is especially personal for Kejriwal, who lost his long-held New Delhi constituency. Additionally, former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia was defeated in Jangpura. The Congress party, once dominant in Delhi under Sheila Dikshit’s leadership, failed to secure any seats in this election.
Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra commented on the results, stating that Delhi’s residents were seeking change due to dissatisfaction with the current governance. She emphasized the need for the party to work harder and remain responsive to the people’s issues.
As the BJP prepares to form the new government, party officials have not yet announced their choice for chief minister.
